Bridging the Green Space Gap in Middlesbrough

How do we measure what truly matters for our city's future? At BORO Doughnut CIC, we start with the data. Reports like the 2024 South Tees JSNA (https://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/media/rpgda1oj/south-tees-jsna-live-well-green-spaces.pdf) give us a clear benchmark: Middlesbrough has just 18.8 sqm of green space per person. To understand what this means: the national minimum standard for wellbeing is 24 sqm, and the England average is 28.5 sqm. Our town's provision is not only below the standard but ranks among the lowest nationally, highlighting a significant gap we must address.

This deficit represents a direct opportunity to improve community health, strengthen social equity, and build climate resilience. Our role is to turn this evidence into action. By using local data to guide our advocacy and projects, we ensure our work delivers measurable value, pushing for a Middlesbrough where both people and nature can flourish.

Looking ahead, our goal is to help bridge this gap. We envision a city where green space is not a luxury, but a foundational pillar of public health and community vitality, creating a legacy of sustainability for generations to come.
